Why is TikTok's Promote button disabled on my own song?
Almost always it’s the music. TikTok only lets you promote videos with original sound or a sound cleared for commercial use, and your distributed song usually isn’t either.
TikTok’s advertising policies for Promote state that sound rule and point you to the Commercial Music Library for cleared tracks. TikTok’s Commercial Music Library page adds that the general music library can’t be used for commercial purposes. That general library is where your distributor delivered your song. Owning the song doesn’t change it, and TikTok doesn’t publish an exception for artists boosting their own track.
Rule out the quick ones too. TikTok’s About Promote page says you must be at least 18. The policy page says the video has to be public, and political content can’t be promoted.
Don’t fix it by re-uploading the song as an original sound. That splits your sound page and can get the video muted, as our TikTok music promotion guide explains.
What you can boost is a video with your own voice on it: you talking about the release, the story behind a lyric, a behind-the-scenes clip. It won’t play the song, so aim it at follows, not streams.
Honestly, your money may do more elsewhere. Posting library-sound videos is free, and so is the setup in our guide to getting your music on TikTok.
